Our Bar
Lieutenant Raymond ‘Bunny’ Charles Belcher, originally from Oxfordshire, was one of the first men to die on D-Day. Our bar is named after him.
Ray Belcher was officer in charge of a harbour landing party whose plane crashed on the night of June 6, killed everyone on board, after being hit.
Known affectionately as Bunny to his parents living in the Vineyard, Abingdon, he had been married for just six months and wife Kay, an ATS corporal, was expecting a honeymoon baby.
Lieutenant Belcher had volunteered for parachute duties and taken off from RAF Fairford just before midnight on June 5/6 setting off to reconnoitre and secure strategically important points.
But the plane crashed, probably after being shot down.
The Ray “Bunny” Belcher bar was named after him to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day in 2024.
