We are a friendly club just a short walk from the town centre, opening our
doors to members, families and guests. You don’t need to have
served to join us supporting a great cause and our community
Today, we issue an urgent plea to you to help save Abingdon Royal British Legion club as we launch a £20,000 crowdfunding appeal.
The volunteer committee which runs the club on your behalf is committed to doing everything it can to fight closure. But we need your support too. Please do whatever you can to help us.
Together we can and must keep our club going.
Our club is part of the fabric of the town. We have been opening our doors to veterans, serving military personnel and their families and raising money to support the Armed Forces for decades.
The club is also a key community asset offering our rooms to musicians, other clubs, societies and local residents.
We are an independent non-profit club operating under licence from the Royal British Legion but receive no financial assistance from them. We are not part of the charity itself.
We raise funds for the Royal British Legion through the Poppy Appeal but all money raised goes directly to the national charity.
We have regular financial commitments, including rent, maintenance and staffing. This appeal will help us not only save the club but replace old equipment, carry out repairs and upgrade the bar area including shuttering to allow the club to be used for wider community purposes.
Our financial struggle is indicative of problems hitting hospitality throughout the country – a tale of rising prices and reduced footfall as the effects of the cash crisis bite. We are not alone. On average 34 pubs are closing a month. Don’t let us go that way.
The Poppy Appeal is important to us and the social club has been running it in the town for more than a decade, raising some £43,000 last year.
